Under lid experiments

Under lid experiment
Under lid experiment
Experimentation with alternatives to portraits under the toilet lids as a part of Don't Linger.

Text experimentation

Experimentation with text - printed and written directly on the wall.

Experimenting with backgrounds and surface qualities

With tile effect wall-paper
Text on tile effect wall paper
Finger print effect
Dirty seat effect on dark tile effect wall-paper

Various experiments involving tile effect wall paper as a background to transform the gallery space into a bathroom space.  I experimented with dirtying the lid to create a more realistic experience of using a public bathroom, but decided that this would put people off interacting with the work.  I also consider creating a finger print on the lid to encourage people to touch it, but felt that this was unnecessary and could also put people off interacting with the work.

Oil paint self portrait

Self Portrait in oil paint with fine liner text (under toilet seat)
At the beginning of the toilet seat project I experimented with different ways of creating the portraits, including oil paint.  I felt that my skills with pencil were much stronger than oil paint, so didn't take the oil paintings any further than one self portrait.

Marsha P. Johnson

Marsha P Johnson, Chaz Howkins, 2018, pencil on paper

Marsha P Johnson (Digital), Chaz Howkins, 2018, pencil on paper and digital manipulation
A drawing created for International Women's Day after being inspired by the documentary The Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson.
Marsha P Johnson was an advocate for the rights of transgender women, particularly trans women of colour.  She spearheaded the Stonewall uprising in 1969 and has been credited for being the first person to throw a shot glass which instigated the original riot.  Marsha P Johnson had an incredibly important role in LGBT+ history and I wanted to pay a tribute to her in gratitude.

Dil Se Charity Auction and Exhibition

Chilling With Bob Ross - exhibition view

Myself with my artwork
I donated my artwork, Chilling With Bob Ross, to the Dil Se charity auction and exhibition at Loughborough University.

Text based piece

I Want To Die, Chaz Howkins, 2018, ink on paper
A drawing consisting of one repeated written phrase, very much influenced by my friend and peer Grace Stones.  I found the creation of this piece to be rather therapeutic as it helped me express and cope with a negative, invasive thought.

Chilling with Bob Ross

Chilling with Bob Ross, Chaz Howkins, 2018, acrylic on canvas
A painting created while watching 'Chill with Bob Ross'.  The painting has a very basic 'paint by numbers' feel to it, but it was very fun to create along with the TV show.  The painting was sold as a part of the Dil Se charity auction and exhibition.
