Genderhouse Festival

Genderhouse Festival Poster
The Genderhouse Festival is a month long arts festival in Aarhus, Denmark which addresses themes of genders, sexualities and identities today. It asks what's queer? Is it here? Are we used to it?

My film, Are You A Boy Or A Girl? and some photography is being exhibited at the Women's Museum as part of the Talking Genders Youth Exhibition.

Marsha P. Johnson

Marsha P Johnson (Digital), Chaz Howkins, 2018, pencil on paper and digital manipulation
A drawing created for International Women's Day after being inspired by the documentary The Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson.
Marsha P Johnson was an advocate for the rights of transgender women, particularly trans women of colour.  She spearheaded the Stonewall uprising in 1969 and has been credited for being the first person to throw a shot glass which instigated the original riot.  Marsha P Johnson had an incredibly important role in LGBT+ history and I wanted to pay a tribute to her in gratitude.

Transphobia posters

Poster in situ
Transphobia Poster, Chaz Howkins, 2017, digitally created poster
After adapting the sanitary bags to read "please dispose of transphobia in the bin provided" I felt this would be an appropriate slogan for a poster so created posters which I placed on the walls of public bathrooms.

Gender is...

Gender is a Social Construct,  Chaz Howkins, 2015, photo manipulation
Gender is a Spectrum,  Chaz Howkins, 2015, photo manipulation
I felt that the double/triple exposures of myself as various characters were interesting but more could be done to them, so I added text to them to reinforce the points I was trying to get across.
This makes the images perhaps too literal, so I may experiment with further ways of expressing gender as a spectrum.
